This policy explains what information Chopbook ("we," "us," "our") collects when you use the Chopbook app, why we collect it, and what control you have over it. "You" means anyone using the app. By using Chopbook, you agree to the practices described here.
Chopbook is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under that age. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we'll delete it.
Account information. Your email address and password when you sign up. Your password is handled by our authentication provider using industry-standard hashing -- Chopbook never sees or stores it in readable form.
Content you create. Recipes you save or import (titles, descriptions, photos, author, source link, ingredients, instructions, cook time, servings), tags/folders you organize them into, notes and ratings you add, meal plans you build, and grocery lists you generate or edit. All of this is tied to your account so it syncs across your devices.
Photos. Chopbook only accesses your camera or photo library when you choose to add a photo to a recipe, or import a recipe from a photo you take or select. You're asked for permission at that exact moment -- nothing is accessed in the background.
Recipe import processing. When you import a recipe from a link or a photo, the relevant page content or image is sent to a third-party AI service to extract structured recipe data (ingredients, steps, etc.), and the same applies when the app estimates nutrition or suggests dietary labels. Chopbook only sends what's needed for that specific request and doesn't retain a copy of the raw page/photo beyond what you chose to save as your recipe. We don't control how that service handles data beyond the request itself.
Information stored only on your device. A local cache of your recipes for offline access, and small settings like your recent searches and which grocery items you've checked off. This data stays on your phone and isn't sent to our servers.
Information we don't collect. We don't use analytics or crash-tracking SDKs, advertising identifiers, or location data. We don't currently process any payments, so we don't collect payment information.
We don't use your information for advertising, and we don't build profiles about you for any purpose beyond running the app itself.
We process your account and content data because it's necessary to provide the service you've signed up for (performing our contract with you) -- for example, we can't sync your recipes across devices without storing them. Where processing isn't strictly necessary for the app to function, we rely on your consent (e.g., granting camera access).
We keep your account and content data for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we'll remove your data from our active systems within a reasonable time -- backups may take somewhat longer to fully clear, as is standard for database backup cycles.
Data in transit between the app and our servers is encrypted (HTTPS). Our database enforces row-level security, meaning the system itself guarantees your data is only ever readable by your own account, not just app-level logic. No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security, but we don't cut corners on the basics either.
The infrastructure providers we rely on may process and store data in countries other than the one you're in. By using Chopbook, you understand your information may be transferred internationally as part of how these services operate.
We work with a small number of trusted providers to run Chopbook -- including cloud database and authentication hosting, an AI service used for recipe processing, and backend server hosting. Each only receives what's necessary to perform its specific function, and none of them are given broader access to your account than that.
When you import a recipe from a link, that link points to a website we don't control. Visiting it is subject to that site's own privacy practices, not ours.
Regardless of where you live, you can at any time:
To exercise any of these, email support@chopbook.app. We're working on building account deletion directly into the app -- for now, email is the way to reach us.
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top and let you know in the app.
